"MOST FAILURES COULD HAVE BEEN CONVERTED INTO SUCCESSES IF SOMEONE HAD HELD ON ANOTHER MINUTE OR MADE MORE EFFORT." When you have the potential for success within you, adversity and temporary defeat shows up only to help you prepare to reach great heights of success.

"The most wonderful gift one human being can give to another, is in some way, to make that person's life a little bit better to live."

THERE IS A VAST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FAILURE AND TEMPORARY DEFEAT.

There is no such thing as failure, unless it is accepted as such. Every defeat is temporary unless you give up and allow it to become permanent. In fact, temporary defeat often makes us stronger and more capable. Each time we try and fail, we learn something that helps prepare us for eventual success. Only in the classroom is there a single correct answer for every problem. If you try an approach that doesn’t work, try something else. When you view adversity as nothing more than a learning experience, your successes in life will far outnumber your failures.

"SUCCESS REQUIRES NO EXPLANATION; FAILURES MUST BE DOCTORED WITH ALIBIS."

The surest way to achieve acceptance in any organization or in any line of work is to be successful. Unfortunately, life doesn’t work that way. No matter how carefully you study a subject, no matter how rationally you make decisions, no matter how well prepared you are, you will occasionally make mistakes. Human beings always do. The important thing is to realize that temporary setbacks are not permanent failures. Successful people recognize that we all experience temporary setbacks that require us to reevaluate our performance and take corrective action to achieve success. They know that adversity is never permanent.

This positive message is brought to you by the Napoleon Hill Foundation.
Very excited! Ric Bratton, host of "This Week In America" has invited me back for another interview! I'll be on the show with Gail Sheedy.

Win One for the Gipper: Knute Rockne Speech. One of the most Powerful, Inspirational and recognized speeches of all time:
http://ping.fm/bT68H

Knute Rockne gave his "Win One for the Gipper" speech to the Notre Dame players at halftime of the 1928 Army game. Rockne was trying to salvage something from his worst season as a coach at Notre Dame. To inspire the players he told them the story of the tragic death of the greatest player ever at ND, George Gipp. Although historians believe that it is doubtful that Rockne's version of Gipp's last words was true, Notre Dame did win the game against Army.

More importantly, the story became solidified into popular culture after its recreation in the 1940 movie, Knute Rockne - All American. The phrase "Win one for the Gipper" was infused into the lexicon of American society and later became a rallying cry for the political campaigns of the actor who played Gipp in the movie, Ronald Reagan. Below is the transcript of the dialogue from the movie that begins one hour and seventeen minutes after the showing of the MGM logo.

The scene opens with the interior of the Notre Dame dressing room. The players, seated with blankets draped over their shoulders, are dejected and silent. The door pushes open and Rockne is wheeled in. They look at Rockne (played by Pat O'Brien) in mute apology, then guiltily away, as if to avoid his eyes. His dark-circled eyes range over the players for a full moment of unbroken silence. Then, quietly, as if the game didn't matter to him:

ROCKNE: Well, boys ... I haven't a thing to say. Played a great game...all of you. Great game.

(He tries to smile.) I guess we just can't expect to win ‘em all. (Rockne pauses and says quietly). I'm going to tell you something I've kept to myself for years -- None of you ever knew George Gipp. It was long before your time. But you know what a tradition he is at Notre Dame...

(There is gentle, faraway look in his eyes as he recalls the boy's words). And the last thing he said to me -- "Rock," he said - "sometime, when the team is up against it -- and the breaks are beating the boys -- tell them to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Gipper...

(Knute's eyes become misty and his voice is unsteady as he finishes). I don't know where I'll be then, Rock", he said - "but I'll know about it - and I'll be happy."

There is a hushed stillness as Rockne and the crowd of boys look at each other. In the midst of this tense silence, Rockne quietly says "Alright," to the men beside him, and his chair is wheeled slowly out of the dressing room.

PLAYER # 12: Well, what are we waiting for?

With a single roar, the players throw off their blankets and rush through the doorway.

Reflection: We all have soneone in our lives like "the gipper." Let's honor that special person, and go the extra mile and WIN our game, our game of life! IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

Ilene L. Dillon wears many hats: psychotherapist, author, Internet radio host, coach, continuing education provider and professional speaker. Recently, someone asked her to prioritize these roles. She responded, "I love them all." Trained as a Social Worker, Ilene graduated with a Master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972. and holds two California licenses–an MFT (Marriage and Family Therapist; MFT 4757) and an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker LCS 7035). Ilene’s personal mission is to teach people (including herself!) about Love. As part of that quest, she has learned about all emotions: why we have them, how to allow and work with them, how to learn from them and why it’s important to then let them go. She has collected 35 years of clinical information about human lives, problems and triumphs, which she uses in her work with groups, classes and in psychotherapy. She, like all of us, reports that she is "still learning." Ilene is completing a manuscript entitled "Born to Learn," which depicts our human role as learners, and is her 16th book.

Thought for the Day ...November 4, 2010

"THERE IS HARMONY THROUGHOUT THE UNIVERSE IN EVERYTHING EXCEPT HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS."

Our universe is characterized by order and harmony, yet we human beings must constantly struggle to achieve the same characteristics in our relationships. In fact, human beings seem to find it unnatural to cooperate with others. Successful individuals are those who have learned to swim against the current, to do the things that others refuse to do. They have learned how to work together for the benefit of the entire group. Achieving harmony in any relationship-business, personal, or professional-requires work. Take comfort in the fact that you’ll accomplish far more working with others than working against them.

"To grow, you must be willing to let your present and future be totally unlike your past. Your history is not your destiny." Alan Cohen
"REMEMBER THAT THE TONE OF YOUR VOICE OFTEN CONVEYS MORE ACCURATELY WHAT IS IN YOUR MIND THAN DO YOUR WORDS."

In a moment of conflict, a suggestion or compromise can salvage a threatened working relationship. A discouraged employee can be motivated again through a few carefully chosen words. In situations like these, a good manager is looking beyond an immediate situation and acting to preserve a future benefit. But if your voice betrays your own anger, fear, or despair, that emotion, not the wisdom you offer, will be what others remember. Those who rise to the top in any organization are those who have learned to control their emotions. When you have a leadership position, others will watch you closely for the signals you send. You must learn to manage yourself and all the ways in which you convey messages to others if you want to inspire them and demonstrate that you care about all the members of your team.
